Understanding Broken Capillaries

You may have heard broken capillaries described with different terms.  Spider veins, telangiectasia, thread veins or red veins describe the same condition. They occur when small blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin become dilated and visible. One or many factors can contribute to their development, including:

  • Genetics
  • Sun exposure
  • Extreme temperature changes
  • Skin trauma or injury
  • Certain skin conditions like rosacea
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Ageing

Our Innovative Solutions to Treat broken capillaries

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy

How IPL Works:

Targeted Light Energy: IPL delivers precise pulses of light that are absorbed by the haemoglobin in the broken capillaries.

Vessel Collapse: The light energy causes the vessels to heat up and collapse.

Natural Elimination: The body naturally removes the treated vessels, reducing their appearance over a period of time.

Benefits of IPL:

  • Non-invasive treatment with minimal discomfort
  • Treats multiple vessels simultaneously
  • Can improve overall skin tone and texture

IPL VS Laser For Broken Capilaries

IPL and laser treatments are both effective options for treating broken capillaries, but they have some key differences:

IPL

  • Uses broad-spectrum light with multiple wavelengths
  • Can treat multiple skin issues simultaneously, including broken capillaries, redness, pigmentation, and overall skin texture
  • Generally less painful and has minimal downtime compared to traditional lasers
  • Effective for diffuse redness and capillaries up to 2 mm in diameter on the face
  • May require multiple sessions for optimal results

Laser Treatment

  • Uses a single, focused wavelength of light
  • More precise and can target specific blood vessels more effectively
  • Better for treating larger, isolated capillaries (over 2 mm in diameter)
  • May be more effective for stubborn or deeper capillaries
  • Can often achieve results in fewer sessions compared to IPL

Both treatments work by targeting the hemoglobin in the blood vessels, causing them to collapse and be reabsorbed by the body. IPL is sometimes preferred for facial treatments because it can address multiple skin concerns simultaneously, while laser therapy may be more suitable for larger or more stubborn capillaries.

The choice between IPL and laser treatment depends on factors such as the size and location of the capillaries, skin type, and any additional skin concerns.

Prevention and Maintenance of Broken Capillaries

Preventing broken capillaries and maintaining healthy skin is part and parcel of overall skin health and appearance. Here are some tips to reduce the risk of broken capillaries and protect your skin:

  1. Sun Protection: Avoid exposure to extreme sun and always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays that can damage capillaries.
  2. Temperature Control: Limit exposure to extreme temperature changes, as these can cause capillaries to dilate and potentially break.
  3. Gentle Skincare: Use gentle cleansing techniques and avoid harsh scrubs, especially if you have sensitive skin or rosacea.
  4. Strengthen Capillary Walls: Incorporate products containing vitamin C and vitamin K into your skincare routine to help strengthen capillary walls.
  5. Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain a balanced diet, stay hydrated, and limit alcohol consumption to support overall skin health.
  6. Regular Facial Treatments: Consider LED treatments or other gentle skin treatments that can help improve circulation and reduce the appearance of facial redness.

Even with preventive measures, some individuals may still develop broken capillaries due to genetics or other factors. In these cases, regular maintenance treatments may be necessary to keep your skin clear and reduce the appearance of veins on your face.
