Why do you get them?

From around the early thirties, lines primarily arise due to natural ageing and repeated facial expressions and the muscle movement behind them, in this case, it’s the frontalis muscle.

Another reason for getting these horizontal lines is a decrease in skin elasticity caused by reduced elastin and collagen production. Sun exposure is, as it always is, another factor. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, etc, will also have a bearing. Yes, they are mostly a natural aspect of ageing, but there are various effective methods to lessen lines and wrinkle visibility, and help actually prevent forehead wrinkles.

What you can do about it?

Treating Forehead Lines with anti-wrinkle injections, commonly known as muscle relaxants, is a widely favoured non-invasive cosmetic procedure aimed at lessening wrinkles and fine lines. Botulinum toxin type A, known by brand names such as Botox, is the go-to treatment. This neurotoxin operates by inhibiting the nerve signals that prompt muscle contractions, thus relaxing the muscles and diminishing wrinkle formation.

Dermal fillers may be recommended depending on where these lines are and how they are formed. We also have the fantastic Fraxel device to help reduce forehead wrinkles, and a chemical peel may be suggested as a standalone treatment or combined with others. A consultation with Úna will ascertain the best method for your forehead lines.

Dermal Health Treatment options

Botulinum Toxin

This treatment is suitable for dynamic wrinkles (lines caused by repeated muscle movements). If muscle movements do not cause your specific lines and wrinkles, then Botox injections will not work and won’t be offered. In this case, another treatment will be suggested. Lines straight across the brow are likely to be dynamic lines, sometimes expression lines. Frowning is one of the causes. Following the injection of anti-wrinkle treatments into the targeted muscles, the botulinum toxin hinders the release of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter that triggers muscle contractions, thereby temporarily immobilising the treated muscles. Consequently, the forehead muscles relax, reducing the visibility of the resulting lines.

Dermal Fillers

Hyaluronic acid-containing dermal fillers are suitable for treating diagonal lines across the forehead. Sleeping on your side may be the cause of these static wrinkles, at least in part, along with collagen breakdown. The injections are strategically placed across the forehead to ensure a balanced, natural-looking result with plumped-up, wrinkle-reduced skin.

Resurfacing laser

Fraxel, our dual wavelength laser is another weapon in our anti-ageing forehead wrinkle armoury. These types of Resurfacing lasers can be used to treat forehead wrinkles effectively. Its ability to stimulate collagen production is its secret, along with the fact it can aid in replacing damaged skin cells with healthy skin cells. The Fraxel device promotes rapid healing as collagen loss is addressed. Fraxel is not suitable for treating every skin type, however.

Medical Grade Skincare

More suited to fine lines and wrinkles, a medical-grade skincare routine has its part to play in combatting wrinkles. Keeping your skin hydrated is always a good place to start. Once you throw in ingredients such as vitamin C for free radical damage, salicylic and glycolic acids, retinol, and others, it becomes apparent how skincare products should have a place in your anti-forehead wrinkle regime. Not to mention SPF-containing products to stop the sun from causing further skin damage. Wear sunscreen is our advice.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels cause deep exfoliation of the upper skin layers. These skin treatments work by triggering what is known as the healing cascade. The skin will produce new, healthier cells to replace old, damaged, and not-so-efficient cells. The result equates to smoother skin with fewer wrinkles.

Combined Treatments

All of the above treatments help get rid of forehead lines in different ways. Botox is used to block the movement of facial muscles, dermal filler to fill lines, skin peels and laser to boost collagen production and exfoliate dead cells, and medical-grade skincare to nourish, repair, and protect. It may be the case that a multi-pronged approach is going to give the best results, especially if you have deep forehead wrinkles. During your consultation, we will determine the best course of action for your particular wrinkles.
