PDO Threads: A Treatment Option at Dermal Health

Sometimes described as revolutionary skin rejuvenation, the PDO thread lift is a popular, and safe non-surgical treatment offering a method for addressing sagging skin on the face. They offer a great alternative to more invasive traditional face lift treatments.

What Are PDO Threads?

PDO threads are medical-grade sutures. The threads are made of polydioxanone, a biocompatible material – indeed, PDO stands for polydioxanone. This material has been used safely in various surgical procedures since the 1970s. As an absorbable thread, the body gradually absorbs PDO threads over several months.

Types of PDO Threads

PDO threads come in three forms, each designed to target specific concerns and improve the appearance in different areas of the face:

  • Mono Threads – Smooth threads that primarily stimulate collagen production, helping to improve skin texture and elasticity.
  • PDO cog threads – These feature small barbs (barbed PDO threads) that provide structural support beneath the skin and are used to lift and tighten, offering a more defined lifting effect.
  • Screw Threads – Twisted threads used to add volume to areas where skin may appear sunken or thin.

Úna will select the appropriate type, or combination, of threads that can be used based on your individual skin needs and aesthetic goals.

How Do PDO Threads Work?

The procedure involves inserting threads beneath the skin using a needle or cannula. These threads are inserted to achieve two main effects:

Mechanical Lift – Some types of PDO threads, particularly those with barbs or cogs, provide immediate support to the skin structure, creating a visible lift and tightening effect in treated areas.

Collagen Stimulation – The presence of the PDO thread stimulates your body’s natural healing response. This process encourages the production of new collagen and elastin, proteins vital for skin firmness and elasticity. This collagen production in the skin continues even as the thread itself dissolves, contributing to longer-term improvements in skin texture and tightness.

Benefits of PDO Threads

Patients may consider PDO threads for several reasons:

  • Lifting and tightening sagging skin, particularly around the jowl, neck, and cheeks.
  • Improving the definition of facial contours.
  • Stimulating natural collagen production in the skin for firmer skin (a natural collagen boost).
  • Providing a non-surgical facelift alternative.
  • Improving skin texture over time.

The PDO Thread Procedure

A consultation precedes all treatments at Dermal Health. During your thread lift consultation, Úna will assess your skin condition, discuss your concerns, and determine if PDO threads, or another type of thread lift procedure used for skin tightening, is suitable for your particular case.

If proceeding with PDO threads:

  • A topical or local anaesthetic is usually applied, similar to a numbing cream, to the treatment area, minimising discomfort.
  • Úna carefully inserts the threads into the predetermined areas under your skin.

The duration of this minimally invasive procedure typically ranges from 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the areas treated and the number of threads used.

Recovery and Results

After the procedure, you might experience some common side effects, leading to some downtime:

  • Mild swelling or redness in the treated areas.
  • Bruising at the insertion points.
  • A sensation of tightness or minimal discomfort.

The side effects of PDO threads will usually subside within a few days to a week, defining the main recovery time. Specific aftercare instructions will be provided, which will typically include:

  • Avoiding strenuous exercise for approximately 1–2 weeks.
  • Sleeping with your head elevated for a few nights.
  • Being gentle when cleansing your face.
  • Avoiding facial massages or other aesthetic treatments for a specified period.

You may notice an immediate lifting effect. Improvements in skin texture and firmness from collagen stimulation, leading to skin tightening and rejuvenation, become more apparent over the following weeks and months as the treatment works to rejuvenate the skin. The PDO threads dissolve around 6 months post-treatment, but the collagen production in the skin can provide results lasting 12 months or longer for many patients, helping to further tighten your skin. As with all treatments, Individual results vary.

Maintenance Treatments

Results can last 12 months or more, but some patients will choose to have maintenance treatments every 12 to 18 months to sustain the effects of the PDO threads. Depending on your skin condition and goals, your Úna may also suggest complementary treatments, potentially like dermal filler, to optimise your results and prolong the benefits.

Common Concerns About PDO Threads

We understand you may have questions or concerns about thread lift treatments. Below are some of the most frequently asked:

Will the results look natural?

Yes. The intention is to subtly enhance your features, lift and tighten the skin, and create a youthful appearance to the face. Not to create an overdone or artificial look.

Does the having PDO threads hurt?

Most patients describe only mild discomfort. A topical anaesthetic is applied to ensure the treatment is as comfortable as possible.

Can PDO threads break or move?

When inserted correctly, PDO threads are secure and designed to remain in place. They gradually dissolve naturally in the body.

Are PDO Threads Suitable for You?

PDO threads are often suitable for individuals experiencing mild to moderate skin laxity, perhaps related to age, who desire noticeable skin tightening results without surgery. Good candidates generally have realistic expectations about the results for their facial and neck areas. A consultation is always necessary to evaluate your specific skin condition, medical history, and suitability for the treatment.
